Masjid Zahir (Masjid Negeri)


The mosque was built in 1912, a contributory effort of YTM Tunku Mahmud Ibni Almarhum Sultan Tajuddin Mukarram Shah. The site of this mosque was the cemetery of Kedah warriors who had died while defending Kedah from the Siamese in 1821. The architecture of the mosque was inspired by the Azizi Mosque in Tanjung PuraLangkat Sultanate (present-day North Sumatra). This mosque is enhanced with five prime large domes symbolizing the Five Pillars of Islam.
Its official opening ceremony was held on Friday, 15 October 1915 by the late HRH Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah. Tunku Mahmud read the Friday sermon while HRH Sultan Abdul Hamid Shah led the Friday prayer. Behind Zahir Mosque is the Syariah Court building complex and a Pre-School for Children aged below 6 years old












The Zahir Mosque occupies a site of approximately 124,412 square feet (11,558.3 m2). Its center hall (Prayer Hall) measures 62 x 62 square feet (5.8 m2) and is surrounded by verandahs of 8 feet (2.4 m) wide with 4 mezzanine areas. Each mezzanine area is roofed by a dome. The main dome is located at the north-eastern part of the mosque building. It is one of the grandest and oldest mosques in Malaysia. The state's Quran reading competition is held annually within the premises of the mosque. This mosque has been voted the top 10 most beautiful mosques in the world.

The Zahir Mosque is located at Alor Setar, in front of Balai Besar Negeri Kedah  Darul Aman. near to the Pekan Rabu.

Masjid Al-Bukhary, Alor Setar Kedah


            Al-Bukhary Mosque (Masjid Al-bukhary)  is located along Jalan Langgar, adjacent to the Souq Al-Bukhary that houses Giant hypermarket in Alor Setar, Kedah. The magnificient mosque was built by the Al-Bukhary Foundation as being the part of Al-Bukhary Complex, which comprises of the Souq Al-Bukhary Trade Center, a Medical Centre, a Comminity Centre, a home of the children orphans, a senior citizen academy and the Al-Bukhary University. 





           The man behind this gigantic mosque complex is Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, a Malaysian tycoon who is popular with his generosity and philanthropic deeds for the society. He is also known for his down-to-earth attitude, and a guy who as much as possible, avoids publicity, cameras and interviews. 
             Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, of Yemeni descent, was born in Alor Setar, Kedah in 1951. He started his business as early as 19 years old which he involved in a trading of cows and buffalo. Due to his family mediocre-to-poor background, he has to step into the working world in his early age while schooling to help his family.He begins by helping his mother planting and selling vegetables in the market and also selling roti canai. His numeric knowledge was used to help his father in doing daily book keeping.He then persuade into trading cows and buffalo which the business inherit by his father. Eventually with his determination and experience, he quickly moved to expand into diversification of other business until what he is known today, as one of the most successful Malaysian Entrepreneurs.
